Pygora Goat
 Color and Pattern Examples
Out of Fleece

Please note:  This color and pattern chart is intended to be used as a guideline only.  These photos are from PBA registered goats born on our farm over the years.  The birth coat, up to 3 weeks of age, is considered the out of fleece coat.  These kid photo's are between 2 days and 3 weeks of age. Some photos are of adult photos after they were recently sheared.  When the fleece starts to come in, it is usually a lighter color than the "out of fleece" color especially in the darker colored animals.  Not all color and pattern variations are shown here.

You will see several of one color as I try to show examples of the different birth coats and examples of adults sheared.  Some coats are straight and some are curly at birth.  This does not always tell the fleece type until the full fleece comes in.  A fleece sample taken from the goat when in full fleece, is the only true way to know what fleece type the animal will be.

The guard hair is not always visible while the fleece is on the goat so once a fleece sample is taken, then it is looked at closely for any visible guard hairs.  This is taken in consideration along with the staple length, style, handle, fineness, and separation between guard hair and fleece when the goat is fleece typed at registration.  Click HERE for detailed fleece type descriptions.
